Elementary school teacher Kaieda Mizuki (Wakui Emi) finds plant seeds and dozens of postcards among the belongings of her grandmother Kimiyo (Minami Mie), who died suddenly. The sender of the postcards is "Chizuko (Asaoka Ruriko)" who lives in Kaimon, Kagoshima Prefecture. Worried about Chizuko, Mizuki heads to Kaimon at the urging of her father Heiwa (Kaniye Keizo). When Mizuki arrives in Kaimon, she reunites with Maezono Takeo (Takeda Tetsuya), who has come to the funeral, and meets Takeo's wife Chizuko, who is also the sender of the postcard, at the inn "Mutsumi-so" run by Maezono. When Mizuki meets Chizuko, she hears the sad story of her grandmother from Takeo... In 1945, Maezono Kimiyo (Wakui Emi, playing two roles) continues to protect the inn "Mutsumi-so" with her daughter Chizuko even after the news of her husband's death in battle. Then Lieutenant Kato Katsuya (Kimura Kazuya), who has feelings for Kimiyo, and three kamikaze pilots, including Second Lieutenant Sawamura Teruo (Kaneko Masaru) and Corporal Okita Akimasa (Ninomiya Kazunari), come to stay. Before their sortie the next morning, they have come to spend their last moments at Mutsumi-so. Kimiyo desperately gathers food to see them off and serves them a sumptuous dinner. After dinner, Kimiyo also feels sad as she senses how Kato and the others feel as they spend a sleepless night. Kimiyo then spends her final night with Kato, fully prepared to face the consequences... The next morning, someone comes to pick Kato and the others up as they leave Mutsumi-so to set off on their mission. Kimiyo and Chizuko hand over flowers to the kamikaze pilots who will never return, and Kato and the others return to the base with big smiles on their faces. As they set off, Kato and the other kamikaze pilots throw the flowers back to the earth as they pass Mt. Kaimon, and disappear beyond the clouds... Having heard Kimiyo's story from Takeo, Mizuki is then told by Chizuko of what happened to Kimiyo after the war. After the war, Kimiyo gave birth to Kato's child, Heiwa. Before that, her husband, who was supposed to have died in the war, survived...
