Summary

Gekidan Engimono: Ishikawa-Ken Gosan-Shi aired on Fuji TV from June 29 – July 20, 2005. It was the 11th program in the rebranded Gekidan Engimono series; a Johnny’s program in cooperation with a theater company. Each story consists of four episodes and a “making of” special.

In this story, Sakurai plays a Hikikomori (someone who doesn’t leave their house and is generally uncomfortable being social) His friend begins to slowly invite different people over to stay at Sakurai’s house, including a mysterious woman who he has an old connection to. The situation gets increasingly unhinged.

This show captured my attention even though I couldn’t follow all of it. It was quite a dark and strange ambience, but that’s one reason I think I liked it. Most of the Engimono series feel quite different from regular dramas because they are more play-like: the sets are few and simple, the story is driven by dialogue and unique scenarios, the effects and editing are minimal. This one had a great atmosphere and the story really freaked out (in a fun way!).
