Summary

Engimono: Kuruu ga Mama (It’s Crazy) aired on Fuji TV from June 17-July 15th, 2003. It was the 11th program in the Engimono series; a Johnny’s program in cooperation with a theater company. Each story consists of four episodes and a “making of” special.

In this story, Aiba plays Kazuya: a cool, hard gambler. Him and his friend find themselves in a mysterious bar where suddenly an intense and twisted game of poker begins. Each member at the table is hiding something, especially Aiba himself! A comedic but emotional tale of deceit.

Aiba did a really nice job with this role. In the behind the scenes he talks about how he has never played such a “hard-boiled” part and that usually his characters are very basic or “standard”. I would agree with that overall. It was nice to see a person who generally has a very playful/silly energy put on the face of someone cool, collected and even a bit evil. This one wasn’t as comedic as the other Engimonos, which is ok, but I tend to prefer the humorous ones. The twist ending was well done though, I definitely didn’t see it coming!
