あきまへんで! ▫️1998 ▫️Episodes
Ok of all the dramas I have watched so far in the timeline (which is only two…), this is my favorite. It is so full of laughs, charm and style! Yes, I am biased toward Nino, but I don’t think he was even my favorite part of the show. The other character stories were actually generally more engaging than Nino’s and he was a bit of a grumpy meanie, which is fine but I wasn’t always rooting for him if I’m being honest.

Right from the start we have chaos and confusion, the camera work and music really bring this silly world alive. I found all the family member characters to be well thought out and they provided a nice balance of moods. Each character has their own challenge that the lead character, Katsura-san, ends up trying to help them deal with. She was such a lovable character and I was always hoping they would learn to love her so she could finally live in peace. I’m not very familiar with Japanese dialects, but it was fun to hear the Kansai one from her here.

Nino’s character is a bit of a troupe, falling for an older woman, but of course this is a popular theme in a lot of Japanese dramas. I think for Arashi they were often cast in these roles to appeal to their older fans and I think that’s fine. I remember when I was in high school I also developed a crush on some teachers etc. Plus it never really gets inappropriate–it usually ends in heartbreak, which in turn leads to growth. Rejection is such an important and relatable theme.

I don’t think this role was perfect for Nino, but he did a nice job. I know he can be a bit of a grump and tease in general, but his character in this show seemed unnecessarily cruel at times. It was nice to see Suzuki Anne as his sister, knowing that she will reappear in Stand-Up!! (and a ton of other Arashi shows). She is such a cutie, I love her energy so much. She is someone I have always felt was bursting with talent from a young age.

The stories of the older sisters were super fun, especially Sam. I love when a show has an emotional grounding but also just exaggerates situations to a ridiculous degree. This show really nailed the balance of genuine emotions and preposterous comedy. I was laughing and crying all over the place, just like the characters themselves.

I would definitely re-watch this show if I ever get the chance and the opening theme by pool bit boys is a certified jam (I got up and danced almost every episode). Even if you aren’t a Nino or Arashi fan, I definitely recommend this one!
