The drama is based on the real-life school, which in 1988 became the first high school in Japan to accept students nationwide who had previously dropped out. Hokkaido Broadcasting (HBC) covered the school for 15 years before releasing a documentary on it. The story in the drama follows Yoshimori Shinya, a former delinquent turned passionate teacher played by Takenouchi Yutaka, as he confronts student bullying, family issues, suicide, smoking, pregnancy, illegal drugs, and more.

Shinya Yoshimori (32) - Yutaka Takenouchi
A new teacher at Hokuto Gakuen Yoichi High School, a passionate former delinquent. He is the assistant homeroom teacher for Class 3C, teaching politics and economics. A graduate of Hokuto Yoichi, he lived in the Kanai boarding house during his student days and was a student in Ando's class. He was a violent delinquent who committed violent crimes, but with the support of Ando and Iwasaki, he reformed and became a teacher. He always puts himself in the students' shoes. He sees himself in his own student, Ujiie, from his high school days.

Yukiko Ando - Kimiko Yo
The homeroom teacher for Class 3B at Hokuto Gakuen Yoichi High School, and the head of the grade, teaching mathematics. Yoshimori's homeroom teacher and mentor from his school days. He has calm and accurate leadership and judgment, and continues to believe in Yoshimori and his other students.

Tatsu Iwasaki - Yoshio Harada
The homeroom teacher for Class 3C at Hokuto Gakuen Yoichi High School, teaching social studies and economics. Yoshimori's mentor.

Yashiki Tetsuji 23 - Aiba Masaki (Arashi)
A new teacher at Hokutomo Gakuen Yoichi High School. He is the assistant homeroom teacher for Class 3-B, teaching Japanese. He is a classmate of Yoshimori's and acts as a kind of partner. He has a clumsy personality and gets into trouble after arriving, but as the story progresses, he builds trust with his colleagues and students and grows as a teacher. He cares about his students.

Naoki Igagami - Sei Hiraizumi
He is the head of the student guidance department at Hokuto Gakuen Yoichi High School. After Iwasaki's hospitalization due to a cerebral hemorrhage, he became the main homeroom teacher for Class 3-C. He teaches English.

Chiaki Kaga - Megumi Ujiie
The main homeroom teacher for Class 3-A at Hokuto Gakuen Yoichi High School, where he teaches physical education.

Makoto Saruwatari - Yoichi Nukumizu
The main homeroom teacher for Class 3-D at Hokuto Gakuen Yoichi High School, where he teaches science. He has been unable to marry for many years and is currently undergoing arranged marriages.

Principal Saotome - Juro Kara
The principal of Hokuto Gakuen Yoichi High School. When one of his students was involved with a yakuza gang, he went to the gang's office to help them, where he was attacked with a knife by a yakuza, and he still has scars on his arm.

Nanae Koga (18) - SAYAKA (Sayaka Kanda)
Best friends with Akane Tsunemoto. She has a kind, caring personality and cares for her friends. Her parents are teachers, and she has a habit of cutting her wrists.

Akane Tsunemoto (19) - Natsuki Kato
She was a delinquent before enrolling. He admires Iwasaki more than anyone else. At first, he rebelled against Yoshimori, but after a bullying incident, he began to trust him.

Kazuto Okumura (26) - Dai Nagai
A transfer student from his third year and currently living in the Kanai boarding house. Before transferring, he was a former yakuza member, but left the gang for his wife and two daughters.

Yuki Toda (18) - Yui Ichikawa
A transfer student from his third year. He has an older brother who recently got married. When he was young, his mother, who divorced his father, took him and his older brother in. However, when his mother remarried and began favoring her stepchildren, he left home with his older brother. He has a strong dislike for his mother, calling her "that woman."

Chiba Kentaro (19) - Oshinari Shugo
A transfer student from his third year, he lives at the Kanai boarding house. He is the smartest student in his school and was expelled after rebelling against his previous school.

Shimada Tetsuki (21) - Ishigaki Yuma
A Kanai boarding house student. He is one of the oldest students in Class 3-C and the mood maker of the class. Though he appears to be a playboy, Yoshimori describes him as "a fool, but a fool who thinks a little."

Sakuda Kumiko (18) - Otsuka Chihiro
In middle school, she was a talented athlete on the powerful track and field team, but an incident at a tournament led to her to developing social phobia. Due to this, she commutes to school from his home in Sapporo.
