天国に一番近い男 – 教師編 (Tengoku ga Ichiban Chikai Otoko – Kyoushihen) ▫️2001 ▫️Episodes

This was an odd but overall fun show. It has a pretty unique hook that keeps you interested–a man (Matsuoka Masahrio from TOKIO) is followed by a guy that claims to be an “angel” and tells him every day he will die unless he performs a certain action (usually related to morals or improving himself). The angel is played by Takanori Jinnai, who some people might recognize from Aiba’s Shimura Ken Tensai Doubutsuen. I have not seen the first show, but apparently this one isn’t even related beyond having the same actor play the “angel”. The reveal at the end of each episode how Matsuoka would have died had he not succeeded was nice.

It has a lot of supernatural elements in it, which I had mixed feelings about. Sometimes they were fun and other times they felt odd or cheesy, but I appreciate that the show was doing its own thing. It had some fun editing styles as well due to the surreal nature in many of the scenes.

Sho plays one of the students and actually has a good amount of screen time for being a side character. We get lots of his cute smiles and I liked his love story here–he’s the most popular guy but falls in love with the most bullied kid in his class and of course has no idea how to handle it. He also got a pretty moving story line about his difficult family situation. There is even some mystery in the show that intentionally frames everything like Sho is actually the evil one behind all the bad things happening. I had a lot of fun with that! Lots of shots of evil, plotting Sho mwuahaha.

I have to admit I’m not a huge fan of Masahiro Matsuoka, he just can’t stand up against his bandmate Nagase. But he still did a nice job playing this character and I appreciated the story of growth that unfolds for him. Even though he annoys me a bit, I found myself rooting for him. I guess it was a good choice because the character himself starts out pretty deplorable.

I’m not sure if I would watch this drama again, but if you like supernatural stuff it’s a good one. There is also an interesting twist at the end (that I tried to avoid mentioning in any of the posts). I don’t know if I liked the twist, but it was interesting…
