Ao no Honou

Kushimori Shuichi, who lives in Shonan, is an honor student at a prestigious high school. One day, his adoptive father, Sone, who divorced his mother 10 years ago, shows up. To protect his family from Sone's tyrannical behavior, Shuichi resorts to legal action, but the adult world's systems do not allow him to return his simple happiness. As Sone attempts to lay hands on not only his mother but also his sister, Shuichi's rage finally reaches a critical point. His intense rage turns into quiet rage, and a blue flame ignites in his heart. Determined to kill Sone with his own hands, Shuichi plans the perfect crime.

"The Blue Light" (Ao no Honoo) is a 2003 Japanese film based on the novel by Yusuke Kishi, which also had a manga and stage play reproduction. The film adaptation attracted much attention as it was directed by theatrical master Yukio Ninagawa. It was Ninagawa's first film in 19 years. Executive producer Tsuguhiko Kadokawa asked Ninagawa to direct, and Ninagawa initially refused, but Kadokawa explained, "This work is the Japanese version of 'Plein Soleil'," so Ninagawa agreed. The novel features themes that were not well known at the time of its release, such as "(adoptive) patricide," "the perfect crime of a 17-year-old," "the Internet," "bishoujo games," and "road racers."
